Edward Burger: Mathematics
Dr. Burger earned his Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin, having graduated summa cum laude with distinction in mathematics from Connecticut College. Prof. Burger's unique sense of humor and his teaching expertise has earned him rave reviews from students worldwide. He was named a "Global Hero in Education" by Microsoft in 2012, a "Game Changer" by HuffPost, and won the Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching in 2010
George Wolfe: Biology
George Wolfe brings 30+ years of teaching experience to Thinkwell’s Biology. He is the Director of the Loudoun Academy of Science, a magnet school for science and technology.
Besides his teaching career, Mr. Wolfe has been an Emmy-winning television host, fielding live questions for the PBS/WXXI production of Homework Hotline as well as writing and performing in "Football Physics" segments for the Buffalo Bills and the Discovery Channel.
Mr. Wolfe has received numerous awards throughout his teaching career including the NSTA Presidential Excellence Award, The National Association of Biology Teachers Outstanding Biology Teacher Award for New York State, The Shell Award for Outstanding Science Educator, and was recently inducted in the National Teaching Hall of Fame.
Dean Harman: Chemistry
Dean Harman is a professor of chemistry at the University of Virginia, where he has been honored with several teaching awards. He heads the Harman Research Group, which specializes in the novel organic transformations made possible by electron-rich metal centers such as Os(II), RE(I), and W(0).
Prof. Harman holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University.
Gordon Yee: Chemistry
Gordon Yee is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. In 2017 Professor Yee received the Alumni Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and the Alumni Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Academic Advising, awards given to faculty renowned for their outstanding teaching and advising skills. Professor Yee was awarded the Alan F. Clifford Faculty Service Award in 2010 for his outstanding contributions to the Chemistry Department at Virginia Tech.
Professor Yee received his Ph.D. from Stanford University and completed postdoctoral work at DuPont. A widely published author, Professor Yee studies molecule-based magnetism.
Tarek Sammakia: Chemistry
Tarek Sammakia is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is also the acting Program Director in the Synthesis and Catalysis programs at the National Science Foundation. Prof. Sammakia received his Ph.D. from Yale University and carried out postdoctoral research at Harvard University. He has received several national awards for his work in synthetic and mechanistic organic chemistry.
Steven Tomlinson: Economics
Steven Tomlinson is a Founding Master Teacher at the Acton School of Business for Entrepreneurship. Prof. Tomlinson has taught economics and finance at The University of Texas at Austin where he earned the Excellence in Teaching award and Outstanding Core Faculty in the MBA Program award during his tenure there. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of Pastoral Ministry at the Seminary of the Southwest.
Prof. Tomlinson graduated with highest honors from the University of Oklahoma and earned a Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University.
In addition to his academic credentials, Prof. Tomlinson is also an accomplished playwright and performer. His award-winning solo shows have been produced in Austin and off-Broadway.
Gerald Rosenberg: Government
Gerald Rosenberg is an associate professor of political science at the University of Chicago, where he also directs the American Politics Workshop and lectures at the law school. He holds a Masters Degree in Politics and Philosophy from Christ Church, Oxford University and has a law degree from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. from Yale.
As a specialist on the judiciary, Prof. Rosenberg is the author of The Hollow Hope: Can Courts Bring About Social Change?. He spent the 2000-2001 academic year teaching at Northwestern University Law School as the Jack N. Pritzker Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law.
Prof. Rosenberg has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and spent the 2002-2003 academic year teaching U.S. law at Xiamen University in China. He has been awarded the Llewellyn John & Harriet Manchester Quantrell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching at the University of Chicago.
Steven Pollock: Physics
Steven Pollock is an associate professor of physics at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He earned a Bachelor of Science in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. from Stanford University.
Prof. Pollock wears two research hats: he studies theoretical nuclear physics and he does physics education research. Currently, his research activities focus on questions of replication and sustainability of reformed teaching techniques in (very) large introductory courses. He received an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship in 1994 and a Boulder Faculty Assembly Teaching Excellence Award in 1998.
Jess Alberts: Public Speaking
Jess K. Alberts is a professor of communication at the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State University, where she was Director from 1995 until 2004. She currently serves as Director of the Conflict Transformation Project and is an associate with Project for Wellness and Work-life.
Undergraduates at ASU honored Prof. Alberts' teaching skills with a "Last Lecture Award," and she has twice been a finalist for Professor of the Year at ASU. Prof. Alberts has given numerous presentations across the country on humor, conflict, and developing and maintaining a passionate life.
Brenda Allen: Public Speaking
Brenda J. Allen is Department Chair and a Professor of Communication at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center, where she teaches organizational communication. Prof. Allen has published numerous articles and book chapters on organizational communication and diversity. She is the author of the book, Difference Matters: Communicating Social Identity.
While at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center, she has been recognized with the First Annual Award for Outstanding Achievement for Commitment to Diversity and she received the Francine Meritt Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Lives of Women in Communication from the Women's Caucus of the National Communication Association.
Dan West: Public Speaking
Dan West is the John A. Cassese Director of Forensics at Ohio University. Previously, he was a distinguished lecturer at Rice University, where he also acted as Director of Forensics. Under his direction, the team consistently placed in the top ten at national debate tournaments.
While at Rice, Prof. West won the Outstanding Faculty Associate and the award for Outstanding Teaching in the Humanities and Social Sciences. He is well known for using his engaging speaking style in a variety of settings; his annual presentation of the Rice University Alcohol Policy to the freshman class was always a hit.
